Canadian Red Cross: First Aid Training

First aid is basic medical care given in good faith to a sick or injured person to maintain life and prevent further injury until professional medical care becomes available and takes over. There are a number of types of courses you may take.

Why First Aid Certification Matters

In Alberta, workers must provide proof of training with a valid workplace first aid certificate, when asked to do so by prime contractors, employers or occupational health and safety officers. Workplace first aid training certifications are valid for up to 3 years.

Course Requirements

To participate in the first aid course, all students must be able to demonstrate all skills and pass a closed-book, multiple-choice knowledge exam to be awarded a certificate. The skills will require participants to be able to perform skills on the floor and also demonstrate effective compressions...it is important that people with health concerns talk with the training provider in advance of the course to see if any accommodations can be made.

Training Equipment

Ventilating Manikins and Barrier Devices

At Safety Connections, we use manikins with disposable lungs, and each person will use a pocket mask with a disposable one-way valve. These are requirements of all first aid courses offered in Alberta...helping to increase safety during training.

AEDs and Other Equipment

The AEDs in the classroom are trainers, as are the epinephrine auto injectors and asthma inhalers. At no time is live medication present as part of the training sessions. Other equipment such as triangular bandages, tourniquets, splints, and blankets are provided as needed through the course.
